How to spend your New York minute

Last month I jetted off to New York City with my daughters and girlfriends for an unforgettable weekend filled with delicious eats, incredible views, one heck of a Broadway show, park time, museum time and downtime. We squeezed it all into just 4 days…and I’m still working on catching my breath!

I wanted to take some time to share with you the most inspirational sights and my hottest tips in case you’re lucky enough to be heading to NYC anytime soon (I sure hope so!).

Where to stay

The Freehand Hotel in Manhattan’s Flatiron District is an artist’s haven. It features custom-commissioned artwork by Bard College students and alumni. Hand-painted art adorns the actual walls in each room and sculptures and framed pieces are showcased throughout the hotel.

Want this freehand look in your home? Just don’t pass the paint brush to any of your toddlers.

What to see

If you caught the Tony’s in June, you may have been dazzled by the performance of the Broadway cast of SIX. This empowering tell-all story about the wives of Henry VII turns history on its head. It’s a pop princess blow-out show and my girls and I absolutely loved it. Get your tickets early!

The Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side is another must see. It explores the lives of working-class immigrants, migrants and refugees in the United States, and how their experiences have shaped the American story. See how they lived and the struggles they faced as you walk through a restored tenement building that housed families between the 1860s and 1930s. Check it out.

Now let’s hope over to Manhatten’s West Side. Be sure to stroll through the High Line, a public part built on an elevated historic freight rail line…crazy, right? The park is a public space to enjoy art, nature and – my favourite – some very cool design. The Flyover, a path 8 feet above the High Line, was a highlight. This path literally floats above the treetops, with an incredible view of bigleaf magnolias, aromatic sassafras and more.

What to eat

After all those sights, you know we were hungry. This article rounds out the best food tours in New York City. The best pizza in Brooklyn? Historical food in Harlem? Greek food in Queens? Just book a ticket and eat your way through the city.

And after all that excitement, I recommend unwinding with a cup of coffee from Culture Espresso. You’ll love the beautiful, relaxed vibe and the killer cookies. Try the chocolate chip! It won’t disappoint.
